So they built it like an attic and it was called an attic but it was a whole complete story. I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. Its empty. The walkway going to the beach, its still there, where the house was. And then, it was declared unsafe, and they come in and knocked it down. You are to get out. Lots of photos, costs, everything. Then, on that side, was the dining room, and the kitchen. And it was actually three stories high. But that was a condo. Stole all that carved stuff, stole all that stuff, that whole box of stuff. A lot of these drapes, they did. I restored the whole housewell, how long did I live there? I have no idea what it would be like to live in some other place. And he and his wife, Adriana, they retired and moved to Florida. He was born here. I remember you always loved it and liked it. So I went around to all the nursesof course, I was in the medical departmentand I asked all the nurses, What are you doing with your stamps? He had come into my room when I was not there, stole everything. Daller: Oh, I dont know. Hes been maintaining it for forty-plus years. But, God, that was almost 100 years ago, you know? So I said, Well, John, youre gonna have to put a lot of money in it because you have all the money, as being who you are. And the backyard is beautiful. Theres a bunch of little houses now built all along through their gardens. Shit. Besides horses and Rusty, there are peacocks too. They were the Mackeys. Q: Was that here in the house? And after he died the family still lived like we had my fathers money involved. But, thats what I did. This was in the East Bronx, this was on 167th and College Avenue. That was a shame. Because, now, they cant tear it down. Burke: Oh, what I want to do isover that fireplace, I want to take that painting downand bring my painting and put it over that fireplace. Burke: I never lived in a little small house, I have no idea. They cant do anything. And each little petal and everything is done beautiful. Theyre deciding they want to build, so they tear down and build. One day, he was gone. Or you can do a small whatever. Its a real pretty smell. She said, Yes, its lilacs. She said Mrs. Whatever-her-name-was always had to have lilacs. So itll be part of Staten Island that people, maybe fifty years from now when theres not a spot left, theyll all come out and theyll look and say, Wow, this is what it used to be.. Burke: Oh, and then the house, when I bought it, everybodythe real estate lady, she wouldnt come in. Yes, Mrs. Mackey. Yes. With a little more improvement, and he would do a little improving on what I wanted, you know, then it was perfect when Mario did it. And it was one of those busy, busy, goddamn nights. And I want my painting. And here was the street. Q: And how did you decide, I guess, how to rebuild? You just named them. Daller: Right, we really dont discuss any of that. But anyway, I had come back to America. Theyd work out, and theyd be waiters, or this and that. Q: And you knew the style from having studied the history of design and architecture. Why cant they just appreciate something for what it is? And then I said, well, now Im going to buy a home. GEORGE CROAKE OBITUARY. And that was the end of that. Im gonna save it, its a gorgeous house!. So every time she wants to go riding, she has to go all the way to New Jersey, ride her horse, and then come all the way back. I mean, I couldnt do stuff like that all the other stuff I could do. It was so overgrown in the front yard and everything. I mean, lets face it. And a couple of my friends came as bartenders for me. They cant just say, The doors are open for anybody, just walk in! Somebody will walk in, and say, Oh, I like those chairs, pick them up, and take them, and theyll be gone. They didnt have it six months and they went under. Yes, he helped me with the colors, and this and that, and what I should getgood orientals for the floor, which I had but they werent these. And Luis was really, really a great guy. Now theyre worth a couple hundred-dollars apiece. They even stopped you riding in the parks. Theyre piled up. And he wanted to retire and he gave his son the business. Daller: Yes. And right there in front of the windows was a coffin with all the flowers around it and everything. And the house was really, needed shapebut thank God it was built as well is it was built, otherwise it would have fallen down. And that was the Air Force. Daller: The staircase wasnt even straight. Q: Well, tell me about getting started on this house. Burke: Anyway, she was well known here on Staten Island. And getting an American Dollar from being in the service, getting my payeven though it wasnt that muchbut at that time, over there, it was worth a fortune. They had The [Charging] Bull in the city and they had the little [Fearless] Girl there. What the woman who was caretaking her, what she had to do was constantly keep lilacs next to the bed. Burke: But everything will stay here exactly as it is, because if its going to be a museum, people are not going to come in and look at empty walls. And then Id been in Europe all that time. That was gorgeous. Because he paid for the entire outside himself. I mean, as a kid going down here crabbing, down on the beach, we used to look back at the house all the time. So I moved into the house here. Valhalla. And, then I gotwhod I get from the city? And I pulled that out and unwrapped it, and what the hell was in it? So I run downstairs. I bet shes there. He says, Hes my good friend, and so on, We live on Staten Island. And I got to know a tremendous amount of people that way. And I would just would go around and Id just pick stuff up. Burke: Oh, well, look what I did. What is a shame is some of the mansionsthe really, really ornate mansions that were torn down. I think hes given you a great history of what started and, basically, youve talked about his life from the beginning, so, I dont know. And I walked into there and I walked up, and the lid was closed on the coffin. Its been so long now. They cant build houses on it. Is that what you want? And then I was able to get all my stuff out of storage and out of peoples homes where I stored them, and furnished the house and moved and lived in the whole house, took care of it. And we used to say, Wow, wonder who lives there? She lived up on Lighthouse Hill. Daller: And he uses every room, he doesnt sit in one room. Burke: But what were we going into before I got into the architecture? And my brother Bill and my brother Ed decided to go into an automobile repair shop. Daller: But it feels like home. That whole salon set there was a Victorian salon setand the couch is a camelback. Burke: I dont find any difference living here. And she was laying like this. You buy me out. And he bought me out. So after a couple of years going back and forth, his daughter, she decided she wanted to get involved in it. See Photos. Well, on theon the fireplace there, those two big candelabras, theyre Meissen. And I dream that I heard some noise. And I never got along with her that much because everything I wanted to do, she said, No, no, no, I dont like that. And she was laying with her arms, like that. It would have been spectacular but greed set in, and thats what they did. Tell us about when you were born? Burke: Oh, when I was a kid, we lived in Annandale. And then, it wasI guess that was in the spring, then later on, I dont know what I was doing. Soon, nobody had room in their house to store anymore of my stuff. And with the money that I made from there, I put it right back in the building. And my uncle came in and was part of the whole group. But they tore the house down to build that school. I wanted to ask about the Equestrian Center. So I picked up this one building that had a little old bar next to it. Oh, God. And the whole big building used to be a big private home, and then they had made it into a restaurant. Before he died, thats what he was. I have questions about closets too! Get out. Burke: But I forgot what the other two things where. He said, when he was moving here, he told the people there, he goes, Im moving. Q: So part of why it closed was because. I had a dream thatin my dream, I woke up and I was laying in bed upstairs, and I could smell lilacs. Daller: You werent here. Burke: I went and I was stationed in England, and I loved being in England. Just landmarked. And he died young. Q: You mentioned that the South Shore has changed in the last few years. Most of them were little things. Q: Yes. And, you know, who has that!? And Diane said, Oh, Marian has it.. Yes, and I had bought the house, but I couldnt have the house and move in until she died. In fact, her husband was a big-wig. A lot of the windows were broken out of it. After Burke returned to Staten Island, he purchased and restored two houses and an old restaurant and bar before he was contacted by Bess Seguine in 1981, who had inherited the then-deteriorated Seguine Mansion. So a couple of days later, I have a dream. You dont have to worry about, sleeping on your couches and all that kind of stuff, and, you know, pulling out fake beds, and that kind of stuff. It has to stay exactly as an old plantation house. And I always used to say, Wonder who lives there! and so forth and so on. And if theyre gonna make a museum out of it, theyre gonna have to pay somebody to greet people and take them on tours. So it just became a moot point. So whenever the big surgeons traveled, I always traveled with themtraveled all over Europe. Of course, she loved the smell of lilacs. So thats where I got most of the stuff thats here in the house today. Thats what I wanted. I was living in London, and I was studying the history of art and design, or something like that, in the University of London, and he was going and he was studying art. And they said, Oh my god, George, what are you Oh, and who else was that? So as long as I own it, I own it, theyll pay for it. Burke: About the candle? So I made sure it was filled in with dirt the rest of the way, so I wouldnt have that water getting in the basement. Because we went to about every Air Force base in Europe there was, and I got around to see everything. Then she got to the point where she couldnt keep it anymore. And I studied architecture and the history of design and everything, I know all that. Its Meissen. And we were great friends. Q: Okay, all of that. It was a sweet sixteen Ill never forget. New York obituaries and death notices, 1986 to rent. And I lived there for quite a few years. They tore down those two nice little cottages that were there. But anyway, she said, No, Im not going in. And she was living here all by herself. And as I said, I was in the military up there and we werent a big group of military, it was like a small base. I hope it isnt that the people who have access come in and empty it because Ive had people say, Oh, when youre not here, Im taking that painting, and Im taking that painting, and I want that couch, you know. Theyre all gone. Burke: Yes, I had to go down in the basement, and put a post, and then I had to jack up the stairs. Of course, when I bought the house, that was all weeds growing up among the bricks. Im sorry that, during all that construction, I wasnt taking photographs, of step by step. And they were good investments. And the house was like this, a big piece with two big wings. But what was really, really bad was people, if they were going to build a garage, or they were going to build something, theyd go to that big, beautiful mansion and rip the siding off of it and take it back to build what they want to build. And with that money, I restored most of the house. Well work it out, one way or another. And so the two of us started and we madecalled it the Old Bermuda Inn because John loved Bermuda and he was putting a lot of money in it. I had the best collection of the most beautiful carved ivory and things because they didnt have money but they would give you things. Syracuse. And I took that for years. The mansion was gorgeous! Q: Yes. Burke: Yes. Burke: Well, I wanted a beautiful Victorian look. Burke: Its never finished!
